Summer Assignments

Summer Reading

Immaculate Heart Academy has always sought to foster a love of literature and reading in our students. For many years, students chose among various subject-matter-specific books and completed projects over the summer, with members of the senior class completing a single “community read” that could be referenced in multiple subjects. This year, we have decided to try something new, and we are pleased to introduce a whole-school community read. Students in 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade will be reading the same novel over the summer in addition to the one required for their English class. When we return to campus in the fall, this book will serve as common ground for in-class discussions, a service activity, or an assembly. This community read will take the place of the subject-matter-specific reads that students could choose in the past.

The primary purpose of the IHA Summer Reading Program is to encourage students to read. While we connect with one book as a community, each English class will also have a required book to be read. These books are interesting, informative, and challenging. The IHA faculty has planned this program with the hope that students will have a rewarding and enjoyable experience and that they will grow in their love and appreciation of reading.

Important Note: There are also some subject-matter summer assignments that are required. Please see below for math and incoming freshmen grammar assignments. Students in AP classes also have required work over the summer, and students should have already met with their teacher to discuss.
