Mini Session Four-Day Workshops

Mini Session 1: July 8-11, 2019

  • Creative Writing - $195

    Creative Writing allows students to develop skills for different pieces of creative non-fiction and poetry. Students read different examples for inspiration and work on the genre of their choice. Students receive instruction on the use of figurative language, sensory details, and structural support, while working both independently and in small group workshops. Students are given the opportunity to express themselves through memoirs, personal essays, travel or food writing, or different forms of poetry. This writing studio allows students to receive one-on-one feedback from both the instructor and peers, and gives a student autonomy in developing his or her creative voice. Open to students entering 8th, 9th, and 10th grades.

  • Personal Leadership in High School - $215

    High School is fun, but it can also be a challenge! There are new buildings, new people, and a whole lot more to manage. This enrichment course aims to help students deal with the ins and outs of high school. The goals are to gain confidence in being your own advocate, learn tools and resources to manage the bumps that often come up during the journey of high school, and master time management skills. Open to students entering 9th and 10th grades.

  • Introduction to Oil Painting - $245

    Spark your inner-artist and get inspired with beginner oil painting classes. Feel welcomed in our warm, nurturing, and exciting art studio! Our classical, fear-free method of oil painting is geared toward total beginners. Students receive personalized art instruction that focus on individual needs. Students learn the fundamentals of oil painting: light, color, form, space, and composition, the very building blocks of individual expression. Explore a wide variety of painting tips and tools, including color mixing, personal subject matter, composition, building texture through paint, palette knife use, details with paintbrushes, and more. Open to students entering 7th through 12th grades.

  • Introduction to Mandarin - $195

    EARLY BIRD SPECIAL - $185 (until April 30)

    Ni Hao! This is a beginning level, project-based intro class will take you to the fascinating world of Chinese culture and Language. No prior knowledge of Chinese is required. Do you know that the Chinese language has no tenses and no grammar drills? If you can draw, you can write in Chinese. Let's have fun together. Open to students entering 7th through 12th grades.

  • Grammar Boot Camp (High School) - $195

    Calling all students who are interested in learning necessary grammar skills for everyday writing and formal essays! Students have the opportunity to gain proficiency in parts of speech, usage, capitalization, and punctuation with comprehensive reinforcement exercises. Not only are these mechanics applied in English and other content areas, but they are also useful tools in college and all job assignments. Open to students entering 9th through 12th grades.

  • Grammar Boot Camp (Middle School) - $195
    EARLY BIRD SPECIAL - $185 (until April 30)

    Calling all students who are interested in learning necessary grammar skills for everyday writing and formal essays! Students have the opportunity to gain proficiency in parts of speech, usage, capitalization, and punctuation with comprehensive reinforcement exercises. Not only are these mechanics applied in English and other content areas, but they are also useful tools in college and all job assignments. Open to students entering 6th through 8th grades.

  • Introduction to Watercolor - $210
    EARLY BIRD SPECIAL - $200 (until April 30)
    IHA RATE - $195 (for current students/incoming freshmen)
    This course introduces students to the fundamental art techniques of watercolor painting in a relaxing environment with hands-on personalized instruction. Students learn basic paintbrush usage, color mixing, color application, and choosing a subject matter while developing a unique painting style. Students explore the rich hues that are created by light passing through transparent pigments while gaining control over the medium. Open to students entering 7th through 12th grades.
 
Mini Session 3: July 22-25, 2019
 
  • Introduction to Broadcasting - $195

    Students gain hands-on experience learning all aspects of television news and feature production in this four-day course. This includes working with the equipment in the TV studio and the Editing Suite, and with field production kits. Students learn to operate and effectively use video and audio field equipment and edit videos using Final Cut Pro. Students learn the techniques of storyboarding and the emphasis is on individual development of clear ideas. Open to students entering 7th through 10th grades.

  • Personal Leadership Training - $215 (fee included)

    This course is a life-saver for the student who wishes to gain the tools needed to navigate exciting academic and personal growth. Students will embrace the attitudes, practices, and systems that give them the ability to manage responsibility and their day-to-day academic life. The ultimate goal of this course is to inspire students to develop and deepen levels of emotional intelligence and to enhance their intellectual capabilities. This course will go over healthy study, organizational, and life skills. Open to students entering 7th and 8th grades.

  • Essay Writing  - $195

    EARLY BIRD SPECIAL - $185 (until April 30)

    Does the thought of writing essays for your English class leave you with a splitting headache or a sense of anxiety? If so, this is the class for you! Over a four-day mini session, this course breaks down the basics of essay writing and helps hone students' writing skills. This course includes tips and tricks for pre-writing and for the actual writing of an academic paper. During the course, students read short stories, and examine possible essay topics and responses. Students have the chance to draft, write, and edit responses to varying essay topics. Open to students entering 7th through 10th grades.

  • Introduction to Batik & Resist Textile Design - $210
    EARLY BIRD SPECIAL - $200 (until April 30)
    IHA RATE - $195 (for current students/incoming freshmen)
    This course introduces students to the wonderful world of ancient Javanese Batik Textile Design. Students learn the fundamental techniques of Batik as well as a variety of other textile resist methods used to create original designs with muslin fabric, hot wax, chanting tools, dye and more. Students work in a relaxing environment with hands-on personalized instruction as they explore this exciting medium. Open to students entering 7th through 12th grades.

  • Introduction to Calligraphy - $210
    EARLY BIRD SPECIAL - $200 (until April 30)
    IHA RATE - $195 (for current students/incoming freshmen)

    This course introduces the student to the art of beautiful hand lettering. Students learn a basic italic hand with the use of some traditional tools including cartridge pens and lettering markers. Letterform consistency and spacing are emphasized to help the student develop his or her eye, as well as their hand. Each student is able to put his or her newly acquired talent to the test by lettering a small poem or quote of his/her choice. Pointers about addressing envelopes with a creative flair are also discussed. Open to students entering 7th through 12th grades. The course will require each student to have some basic supplies:

Calligraphy Cartridge pen with several cartridges

Brush Markers and broad-edged lettering markers.

  • Sweets, Treats, and Snacks - $230

    Impress your friends and family with some new treats! Learn how to make fun and yummy no-bake items. This is one of our most popular courses, so sign up early. Open to all grade levels. Not a good selection for students who have food allergies. Open to students entering 6th through 9th grades.
