On the afternoon of January 8, 2019, we welcomed Dr. Selim Arcasoy P’20 to give a school-wide presentation on transplants and organ donation. Dr. Arcasoy, father of IHA junior, Leyla, is the Medical Program Director of Lung Transplantation at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital of Columbia and Cornell University. He presented thought-provoking facts about organ transplants, giving special attention to lung transplants, and also introduced three of his former patients, all recipients of double lung transplants. Sonia Carlen, Alexandra Argentieri, and Denise Peoples talked to the IHA community about their arduous yet inspiring transplant journeys. Denise, who is a family support and community educator for the NJ Sharing Network, also spoke specifically on how our students and faculty members can educate themselves and their families on the decision of becoming an organ donor. NJ Sharing Network is the non-profit organization responsible for the recovery and placement of donated organs and tissue for those in need of a life-saving transplant. Nearly four thousand New Jersey residents are currently awaiting transplantation, while one hundred and fifteen thousand people are on the national waiting list. The organization’s goal is to educate New Jersey residents about the life-saving benefits of organ and tissue donation and transplantation, so they can discuss donation with their families and make the personal decision to register as a donor. We are so very grateful Dr. Arcasoy, Sonia, Alexandra, and Denise for sharing their expertise and experiences with the IHA community!
